Teacher Education Assessment System

The primary goal of the Teacher Education Program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is to prepare prospective and current teachers to be thoughtful, competent, dedicated and caring professionals. Our Conceptual Framework emphasizes the professional development of teachers and other educational personnel as a lifelong, reflective process.

As part of this continuing learning experience, the Assessment System outlined in the brochures linked here was developed so that both our current students and our faculty will have a clearer idea, at different points in time, of teacher candidates’ success in achieving our goals for them.

Each brochure features three benchmark levels of the assessment system: Initial, Gateway, and Capstone. All Initial benchmarks are met before a candidate is accepted into the Teacher Education Program; the Gateway benchmarks are met during the candidate’s progress through the chosen TEP major; and Capstone benchmarks are met by all candidates during Student Teaching.
