Workforce Education and Development

To Begin July 1, 2010


The College of Education and Human Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale seeks applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Workforce Education and Development.  Approximately 28 full-time faculty participate in the offering of Baccalaureate, Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy in Education degree courses, program specializations, and concentrations at on-campus and off-campus sites.  The department offers a major in Workforce Education and Development.  Included among the department’s off-campus offerings is a baccalaureate program delivered on military bases throughout the United States.   The Department of Workforce Education and Development has a history of external funding, and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research productivity, and service in the profession.

Responsibilities of Position

The Chair is the chief administrative and fiscal officer of the department and will be responsible for coordinating the academic matters of the department, research activity, faculty development, department service activities, and recruitment/retention. In addition, the Chair may teach courses and will be expected to continue a program of scholarship. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services

Qualifications of Candidate

  • A doctorate in workforce education and development  or a closely related field
  • A substantial record of scholarly publication
  • Expertise and teaching experience in at least one of the Department’s specialty areas
  • Experience sufficient to qualify for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure and graduate faculty status in the Department of Workforce Education and Development

Preferences will be given to persons with demonstrated:

  • Administrative experience and leadership skills in budget and personnel, curriculum and program development, organizational management, consensus building, and participatory problem solving
  • Experience with and ability to advocate for and facilitate the implementation of undergraduate, master’s and doctoral academic programs in a multidisciplinary department
  • Ability to secure and manage funded research, training and service projects
  • Ability to develop collaborative partnerships with faculty, students, funding sources, and the community
  • Ability to promote faculty effort toward professional development, research activities, and community service
  • Commitment to continued development of educational technology across specialty areas

Appointment
The position is a twelve-month, continuing appointment to begin July 1, 2010.  Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
