Assistant Professor of Recreation
Department of Health and Recreation
To Begin Fall August 16, 2010
Position: Assistant Professor of Recreation in a department which offers a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Recreation.
Duties:
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in recreation.
- Advising graduate students and serving on thesis committees.
- Initiating and implementing a focused research agenda leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Securing external funding for research and training projects.
- Working with other recreation faculty on NRPA accreditation.
- Working with the faculty in interactions with other departments in the College and University to advance Recreation on campus.
- Serving the public and constituencies of the Department, the College, and the University.
- Assuming departmental responsibilities when assigned or selected.
Qualifications:
- The rank of Assistant Professor requires the doctorate in Recreation or related field. Applicants who have completed all but the dissertation and who expect to complete all requirements for the doctorate prior to August 15, 2010 will be considered. If official evidence of completion of all requirements for the doctorate is not received by August 15, 2010; the position offered will be a term appointment with the rank of Instructor at a lower salary.
- Persons applying for this position must demonstrate:
- Ability for quality teaching.
- Ability to maintain a research agenda leading to peer-reviewed publications
- Interest and/or experience related to securing external funding for research and training projects.
- Commitment to participation in appropriate professional associations
- Interest and/or experience in working with park districts and/or municipal recreation departments.
- Interest and/or commitment to establishing linkages with practitioners and professional organizations.
- Preferences: professional preparation, experience, and research interests in recreation administration (management) and an awareness and/or experience in working with NRPA accreditation.
Appointment: This is a continuing, tenure-track appointment effective August 16, 2010. Appointment is on a nine-month academic year basis. Contingent on available funding and demand for teaching assignments, an additional summer session appointment may be possible. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and background. Progress in rank and salary will require demonstration of productivity in research and publication, teaching, and service.
