Department Chair
Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education

To Begin Fall July 1, 2010

The College of Education and Human Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale seeks applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education.  The department currently has seven full-time faculty representing specialties in educational administration, higher education, and the social foundations of education.  The department offers graduate degrees, including the Ph.D., certification programs in Education Administration and master’s degrees in Educational Administration, College Student Personnel, and Community College Teaching.

Duties of the Position

The Chair will be the chief administrative and fiscal officer of the department and will be responsible for coordinating the academic matters of the department, research activity, faculty development, faculty evaluation, department service activities, and recruitment/retention. Also, the Chair will develop and maintain partnerships with P-20 schools, outside agencies, and colleges. In addition, the Chair may teach courses and will be expected to continue a program of scholarship. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services.

Qualifications of the Candidate

  • A doctorate in educational administration, higher education, foundations of education, or related field
  • Expertise and teaching experience in at least one of the Department’s specialty areas, preferably Educational Administration
  • A substantial record of scholarly publication
  • Experience sufficient to qualify for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure and graduate faculty status in the Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education

Preferences will be given to persons with demonstrated:

  • K-12 Administrative experience
  • Ability to develop collaborative partnerships with faculty, students, P-20 educational organizations, funding sources, and the community
  • Ability to promote faculty effort toward professional development, research activities, and community service
  • Willingness to secure and manage funded research, training and service projects

Appointment
This is a continuing, tenure-track appointment effective July 1, 2010. Appointment is on a nine-month academic year basis. Contingent on available funding and demand for teaching assignments, an additional summer session appointment may be possible. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

Assistant/Associate Professor
Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education

To Begin August 16, 2010

Description of Position: Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of educational administration in the Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Responsibilities of the Position: Areas of responsibility include teaching graduate-level courses in educational administration; pursuing a continuing line of research activities leading to scholarly publications in nationally refereed journals and external funding; supervising principal and/or superintendent interns; advising certification students; establishing ties with K-12 school administrators in the region and state; providing service to constituencies of the Department, the College, and University; and assuming other departmental responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements of Candidates:

  1. An earned doctorate with a specialization in educational administration or a related field. Applicants who have completed all requirements, except the dissertation, will be considered for the rank of Assistant Professor. If official evidence of completion of the appointee's earned doctorate is not received by August 15, 2010, the position offered will be a term appointment at the rank of Instructor and at a lower salary.
  2. Successful experience as a K-12 school administrator and eligibility for IL type 75 certification.
  3. Applicants for the rank of Assistant Professor must show potential for the development of a record of research and grant activity.
  4. Applicants for the rank of Associate Professor require a substantial record supporting excellence in teaching, research productivity, and professional service activities.
  5. Oral proficiency in the English language as required by Illinois state law.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience as a superintendent and eligibility for a School Superintendent endorsement in the state of Illinois.
  2. Expertise in utilizing school based information management systems.

Appointment and Salary: This is a continuing tenure-track appointment. Appointment is on a nine-month academic year basis. Contingent on available funding and demand for teaching assignments, an additional summer session appointment may be possible. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and background. Progress in rank will require demonstration of productivity in research, publication, teaching, and service.
