Faculty Mentoring Programteacher with students

The mentoring program in the College of Education and Human Services is designed to promote the development of productive academic careers of new tenure-track faculty. A committee composed of Department Chairs/Directors and the Associate Dean for Administrative Services will assign new tenure-track faculty members who choose to participate in the program, an Associate Professor or Professor to serve as a mentor. The program is entirely voluntary for both the mentor and the protégé.

Role of the Mentor
Mentors guide and facilitate the academic career of a new or junior level faculty member. Possible mentoring activities include:

  • Assisting new faculty in getting acquainted with SIUC
  • Supporting new faculty in professional development
  • Helping new faculty assimilate into the profession at the national level
  • Advising new faculty on the promotion and tenure process
  • Collaborating on research
  • Assisting with instructional design and materials
  • Providing constructive feedback on grant proposals, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and conference presentation

Mentoring Program Features and Benefits
Mentoring relationships can result in many positive outcomes for both the mentor and protégé. Potential benefits of participation in the mentoring program include:
  • The program can be helpful to new faculty members who may otherwise be hesitant to initiate a relationship
  • The program is intended as a means to render support to new faculty members and facilitate productive and satisfying academic careers
  • Mentors can be assigned from any department within the College or arranged with other colleges at the request of the new faculty member

Besides the assignment of a mentor, we sponsor four interactive “workshops” for new faculty, two in each semester of their first year.  They are:

  1. Orientation to College Facilities and Resources (with department chairs and associate deans from our college helping me to lead a discussion on promotion and tenure)
  2. Teaching Effectiveness (with former “Teacher of the Year” awardees from our college helping us discuss the art and science of teaching)
  3. Academic Writing (with journal editors and associate editors from our college discussing strategies for getting manuscripts published)
  4. External Funding and Grant Writing (with research project specialists discussing strategies for competing for external funding to support research and service activities)
