The mission of the Journal of African American Children’s Literature (JAACL) is two fold: one to promote, preserve and disseminate information about African American Children’s Literature; second to provide innovative, original research that promotes progressive and transformative scholarship on the historical and contemporary analysis of African American Children’s Literature (AACL) that is written and/or illustrated by African Americans.
The focus is African American Children’s Literature that is specifically geared towards elementary school students. This mission is reflective of the journal’s logo the Sankofa bird which represents the philosophical belief that we must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward.
The JAACL is dedicated to the comprehensive discussion of research that will preserve, promote, support and recognize African American children’s literature that will provide educators of African American students with positive insights into their history, culture and traditions, as well as enable African American children to feel a sense of self-worth.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
Description: The scholarship in (JAACL) includes the areas of curriculum and
instruction, literacy, picture book /visual literacy, classroom pedagogy,
college teaching, history, race theory, research methodology, culture,
psychology, literature, language, and social and contemporary educational
issues. JAACL accepts scholarly articles, essays, book reviews, interviews,
and bibliographic essays. Currently, the journal is published twice a year
during the Spring/Fall. In JAACL we will review, qualitative or quantitative
research, that includes, but is not limited to:
* “Best” practices of African American Children’s Literature AACL
* Treatments of race, racism, and racial awareness
* Identity formation/pride in heritage/ancestral legacy in AACL
* Self-perception and self-esteem
* Theoretical or conceptual analysis of culture and the role of characters
* New forms of transformative images in AACL
* Critical book reviews of related literature
* Thematic papers addressing aspects of AACL
* Historical investigations and biographies
* Interviews
EDITORIAL BOARD OBJECTIVE:
The Journal of African American Children’s Literature (JAACL) uses a
peer-review process to examine scholarly work. All articles published in (JAACL)
are peer reviewed. Members of the editorial board represent scholars from
universities, colleges and disciplines across the country. In addition, the
editorial board is made up of members who posses a broad and comprehensive
range of expertise in various areas of African American children’s
literature. The overall aim of the editorial board is to promote and engage
in the review of scholarly manuscripts that are aligned with the mission of
the journal. The members of the editorial board and others conduct the
anonymous review.
MANUSCRIPT ACCEPTANCE POLICY:
The Journal of African American Children’s Literature (JAACL) does not
request assignment of copyright from authors. The copyright and legal
responsibility remains with the author. Although the copyright and legal
responsibility remains with the author, it is understood that JAACL does
have nonexclusive rights to publish the contributions, without limit, to
include the contribution as part of any reprinting of the issue and/or
volume of the journal in which the contribution first appeared by any means
and in any format such as CD-ROM, on-line journals, educational purposes,
readout, etc… in which the issue and/or volume may be reproduced by the
publisher or by its licensed agencies.
TIMETABLE:
The Journal of African American Children’s Literature (JAACL) accepts
manuscripts at anytime. However, the deadline for manuscripts for peer
review and consideration for the Fall, 2005 edition of JAACL is November
4,
2005; and for the Spring, 2006 the deadline is March 1, 2006. This process
may take several months. Manuscripts and disk submitted to The Journal of
African American Children's Literature (JAACL) will not be returned. The
author will be notified of the reviewer’s decision.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
JAACL does not consider manuscripts that are under review elsewhere or that
have been previously published. Manuscripts should not exceed (20) twenty
double-spaced typed pages (about 1000 to 5000 words). Please include all
reference lists double-spaced. All manuscripts should follow the format
outlined in the 5th edition of the Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association. Manuscripts should be typed in Microsoft Word
using 12 font typed face on 8 1/2 x 11 inch standard bond white paper. Any
photocopies of illustrations should accompany the manuscript. Reproduction
of quality prints of illustrations will be required for manuscripts that are
accepted for publication. The first page of the manuscript should have the
article title. The text should start two inches below the title. The
author’s names should not appear on the manuscript, and all references in
the body of the text that might identify the author to the reviewers should
be removed. Please submit two (2) copies of the manuscript and two (2)
copies of the abstract (of not more than 150 words). Submission should also
include a disk copy of the manuscript preferably in MSWord of the abstract,
manuscript, and cover page (3 separate labeled files).
