Journeys Magazine |
October 1 – Journeys, our new annual, 24-page glossy magazine, was mailed out to more than 13,000 alumni and distributed to full-time faculty/staff and others in the College and across campus.
October 3 – We sponsored a table of eight at the Poshard Foundation Annual Dinner and Auction at John A. Logan College. (This foundation provides several scholarships to our students every year.)

October 5 – Professor Michael W. Apple from the University of Wisconsin at Madison spoke to close to 300 faculty, staff and students during his visit with us.
October 8 – Education graduate program coordinators and I met to continue our close review and revision of the Education PhD. program, with our next meeting scheduled for November 18.
October 9 - I participated in the honoring of five SIUC Distinguished Alumni, of which two are from our College (Benjamin “Benny” Dunn and Colonel Joe. E. Johnson).

October 10 – At University Homecoming Day, we sponsored an informational booth, gave out tote bags, and greeted alumni and other friends of the College. [See photo.] Thanks to Fred Hees, Natalie Branca and Dave Ardrey (Dean’s Office) for organizing this event for us. In addition, the educ8kidz (early childhood) student organization participated in the Homecoming Parade and handed out 250 books to children along the route. Thanks to the students and their faculty sponsor, Christie McIntyre (CI).
October 12 – Mizan Miah and Shari Selander (SW) hosted a luncheon that honored several dozen staff members working for the Integrated Assessment Program in the School of Social Work. Among those joining me in offering comments were President Glenn Poshard, Chancellor Sam Goldman and Vice Chancellor John Koropchak.
October 12 – Barb Grace and Lynn Smith (CI) and I met with the City Manager of Carbondale to finalize a Prevention Initiative agreement that was later approved by the City Council. It will mean that our Southern Illinois Early Childhood Region Program will provide parent education services at the Eurma Hayes Center.
October 13 – The Student Social Work Agencies Field Fair took place in the Student Center Ballrooms.
October 14 – The 13th Annual School Administrators’ Legal Roundtable, co-sponsored by the Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education and organized by Associate Dean Brad Colwell, attracted about 100 current and prospective principals and superintendents to our campus.
October 14 – Tony Calabrese of the Department of Kinesiology presented to 16 colleagues as part of our COEHS Scholarship Brown Bag Series. [Learn more]
October 14 – Several of our departments sponsored tables at the Graduate and Professional Schools Recruitment Fair that took place at the Student Center. Faculty and staff from the Rehabilitation Institute, School of Social Work, Department of Kinesiology, and Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education met with interested undergraduates.
October 15 – I attended a very well-done (and can I say adorable?) presentation by children from the Child Development Laboratories, who spoke about their Grocery Store Project in front of an appreciative audience of CDL staff members (including director Lori Van Horn), parents, students and friends.
October 15 – I was honored to give the Commencement Address at Scott Air Force Base, for our undergraduate program offered by the Department of Workforce Education and Development. The event was organized by our site coordinator, Jeanne Aguirre.

October 17 – We sponsored a table of eight at the SIUC Inspiring Women’s Gala on campus, at which one of our students was recognized for the scholarship she receives.
October 18 – The University Telefund for our College began, with Executive Council members visiting student workers over the course of several evenings to encourage them in their efforts on our behalf.
October 21 – Jackie Cox, Joyce Killian, Christie McIntyre, John McIntyre, and Lynn Smith (CI), Regina Foley (EPSE), and Denis Overturf and Jan Waggoner (Dean’s Office) met with local school district colleagues as part of our continuing Professional Development School Partnership. [Learn more]
October 22 – Pablo Tobon, a student in College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, met with Executive Council members to discuss next steps for the production of a DVD that will highlight the different undergraduate programs in our College. The intent is to distribute the DVD widely to local high schools in the region and to put it on our College website.
October 23 – We hosted the COEHS Emeriti Faculty Luncheon at the Student Center, which was organized by Carol Reynolds and Pam Battaglia (Dean’s Office). [Learn more]

October 24 – We sponsored our annual Tailgate Party prior to the football game with Youngstown State University. Thanks to the work of Dave Ardrey and Jodi Miley (Dean’s Office), we provided a wonderful lunch from The Stadium Grille to almost 200 folks and distributed free football game tickets to about 40 faculty/staff and their family members.
October 26 – I was interviewed by WSIU-TV regarding our new partnership with the I Can Read Program at the Eurma Hayes Center (a partnership that was also highlighted in the “Southern Illinoisan” the day before). Thanks to Marla Mallette (CI) and graduate assistant Megan Johnson for helping to coordinate this partnership.

October 30 – The Department of Curriculum and Instruction sponsored a Halloween-inspired Chili Cook-Off. Though hardly a culinary expert, I was honored to serve as judge for the event. And the winner was . . . . . . Stacy Thompson!! Other delicious entries were provided by John McIntyre, Louise Stearns, Lisa Grotts, and Donna Schumaier. [See below for the winning recipe.]
WED Trick or Treating |
October 30 – Accompanied by Chair Beth Freeburg, I was visited by some very scary – and some very beautiful/handsome – Halloween monsters from the Department of Workforce Education and Development. See photo and make your guesses. (Most impressive was Bill Shields being able to fit into his uniform from the Korean War!)
To provide some additional information of our accomplishments, I put together a four-page “College Highlights” that can be shared with alumni as well as colleagues and friends in and out of the College (and especially potential donors).
