VII. Prospectus, Dissertation, and Final Oral Examination

1. Choosing a topic for the dissertation

In choosing a topic for the dissertation, the candidate should:

A.  Prepare a prospectus for the dissertation and submit it to the student’s committee for approval.

B.  Submit one copy of the prospectus and the prospectus approval form to the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services.

2. Research Involving Human Subjects

Any research involving human subjects must be reviewed and approved by the SIUC Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to the start of the research project. If the research paper, thesis, or dissertation involves human subjects, an officially completed Carbondale Committee for Research Involving Human Subjects (CCRIHS) Form A (available in the Office of Research Development and Administration, Woody Hall C206) must be included in the final copies submitted to the Graduate School.

Place the form in the Appendix Section. If this form is not included, the document will not be accepted by the Graduate School. For more information, contact the SIUC Human Subjects Research Committee, at (618) 453-4533.

3. Preparation of the dissertation and for the final oral examination

In the preparation of the dissertation and for the final oral examination, the candidate should work with the doctoral committee chairperson and consult with other members of the doctoral committee as needed or as outlined by the chairperson. The student should follow the procedures outlined in the Graduate School brochure in the preparation of the dissertation.

4. Date for the final oral examination

The doctoral committee will set the date for the final oral examination and publicize it.

5. Final examination

There will be a final examination administered by the student’s committee. The examination will cover the subject of the dissertation and other matters related to the discipline.

Any member of the graduate faculty may attend the final oral examination and may participate in questioning and discussion, subject to reasonable limitations imposed by the chairperson of the committee. Only members of the committee may vote or make recommendations concerning the acceptance of the dissertation and final examination.

A student will be recommended for the degree only if the members of the committee, with at most one exception, judge both the dissertation and the performance at the final oral examination as satisfactory.
