Tony Calabrese

 

Tony is very familiar with SIU.  As an SIU undergraduate, he was here the first day the Student Center opened, and as an SIU Graduate Assistant in Physical Education, he was the first Graduate Assistant hired to teach in the new Arena.  He was a member of SIU’s Gymnastics Team that won a National Championship and compiled an overall record of 68 wins and no losses over an 8 year period. 

After graduating from SIU, Tony taught Physical Education and coached at Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, Illinois.  He was recognized as Illinois and Midwest “Physical Education Teacher of the Year”, and was a Finalist for “National Teacher of the Year”.

He was also inducted into the Illinois “Coaches Hall of Fame”, and selected on 3 different occasions as “Coach of the Year” for Gymnastics and Volleyball. 

After teaching high school for 30 years, Tony retired in 1994 and moved back to southern Illinois. 

In 2001, he returned to Southern Illinois University and has taught classes in: Physical Fitness, Team Sports, Individual Sports, Elementary and Secondary Methods, Volleyball, Special Populations and Teambuilding.  Tony’s main emphasis at SIU is in the Teacher Education and Teambuilding Programs.
