Master of Arts in Teaching (CI):
(M.A.T.) program is intended for persons who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Fine Arts) in the liberal arts or sciences at an NCATE-approved (or otherwise appropriately-accredited) college or university, and desire to pursue licensure for teaching at the secondary level. Those enrolled engage in a year-long internship in a public school setting while also completing university-based studies culminating in the Master's Degree and Illinois teacher certification for the appropriate grade level(s) and content preparation. The M.A.T. is designed as a high-quality, technology-enriched, accelerated certification program; time-to-degree is approximately fifteen (15) months, including one full academic year and two adjacent or contiguous summer sessions of coursework. Those holding undergraduate degrees in teacher education, and those interested in teaching students in grades K-8, are ineligible for this program.

Upon graduation from the program, candidates can become certified to teach in a school system in Illinois or in a state offering reciprocity. They will be broadly prepared in their content areas, and will possess leadership experience pertinent to the public school setting. Students progress through the program as members of an interdisciplinary cohort and are required to work collaboratively within that cohort to investigate and make recommendations about school-based problems and issues using action research approaches. Behavior Analysis and Therapy (REHAB):

SIUC is proud to have been the first behavior analysis degree program in the world. Following this distinction, the program has had a 50 yr rich history in the field of behavior analysis and currently holds Association for Behavior Analysis Accreditation. Only 12 other schools in the world have this same distinction.

The Masters Degree course work is approved by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board, and is designed to provide the student with a well-rounded blend of didactic courses, hands on experience, and research opportunties.The mixture of classes and field experience result in the graduate having the best possible preparation for the workforce or doctoral training that lies ahead.

Starting graduate salaries range from $50,000 - $70,000. Students have a 100% placement rate. Learn more

College Student Personnel Concentration (EAHE):
For the preparation of entry-level practitioners in colleges and universities in the student affairs areas such as residence life, student centers, student development and programming, financial aid, student life, recruitment, orientation, advisement, and placement. Learn more

Community College Teaching Concentration (EAHE): A cooperative degree program operated in conjunction with other academic units within the university for the preparation of persons to teach in the academic areas of the community college. Learn more

Communication Disorders and Sciences (REHAB):
The Communication Disorders and Sciences (CDS) program specializes in the area of speech-language pathology. Speech-language pathologists are professionals educated in the study of human communication, its development, and its disorders. By evaluating the speech language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing skills of children and adults, the speech-language pathologist determines what communication problems exist and the best way to treat them. As a student in the CDS program. you would study normal communication as well as procedures for assessment and intervention of persons with communication disorders. Learn more

Community Health Education (HER): Our program offers a Master’s of Public Health (MPH) in community health education.  Completion of this degree prepares students with advanced-level skills to practice health education in a variety of community settings.  Course work address both the five core public areas and the Advanced I health education competencies/sub-competencies.  Graduates of this program are prepared for employment in leadership or practice roles in settings such as community health agencies; local, state and federal health agencies; and medical and corporate settings. Counselor Education (EPSE):
The Counselor Education program offers only graduate degrees. The Master of Science in Education (MSED) degree within the Counselor Education program prepares individuals to become professional counselors and provide specialization in three distinct areas: (1) community counseling; (2) school counseling; and (3) marital, couple, and family counseling.

(1). Community Counseling is a 51 semester hour program that prepares students to provide clinical and multicultural professional services to individuals and groups in variety of settings. The settings for professional community counselors include, but are not limited to: community mental health agencies, hospice, adolescent treatment centers, children and adolescent residential treatment facilities, university career counseling centers, wellness centers, non-profit agencies, correctional facilities, employee assistance programs, and private practice. (2). School Counseling is a 51 semester hour program that prepares students to become dynamic, multiculturally sensitive counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, work as educational leaders, and advocate for student growth and development as well as systemic change. Our program works collaboratively with the surrounding communities and partners with local schools to foster an understanding of the economically, socially, and culturally diverse needs of rural- and town-based educational settings. (3). Marital, Couple, and Family Counseling is a 60 semester hour program that builds on community or school counseling for an additional specialization. This program prepares students to work clinically with couples and families in various settings. The program emphasizes systems thinking and theory, interpersonal relationships, knowledge acquisition and competent skill application to a diverse population of couples and families. Learn more

Master of Science in Education (CI):
Degree in Curriculum and Instruction requires the completion of a minimum of 32 or 36 hours of course work, depending on the research requirement selected. At least 15 of the required semester hours must be at the 500 level and taken at SIUC. The student must also meet Curriculum and Instruction core course requirements, research requirements, and specialty area requirements. No more than 11 semester hours of credit earned at another NCATE-accredited college or university may be accepted toward this degree.

Each candidate's program is planned in consultation with a faculty adviser from the specialty area selected by the student, with consideration for the student's interests, experience, and specialty area. Ten specialty areas are offered: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Instructional Design/Development, Instructional Technology, Mathematics Education, Middle Level Education, Reading and Language Studies, Science Education, Social Science Education, and Teacher Leadership. Non declared graduate students are advised to consult with the department chair concerning admission to the master's program. Learn more

A student desiring teacher certification (preschool, elementary, secondary, or K-12) must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program and must follow the teacher certification entitlement process established by SIUC in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education. An alternative route to certification is available through the College of Education and Human Services for qualified candidates. The department also offers the Master of Arts in Teaching degree program that leads toward secondary certification. Several areas of study offer coursework designed to meet certification or endorsement requirements set by the Illinois State Board of Education. Consultation with an adviser and a carefully determined program of study can lead to the desired certification or endorsement.

Master of Science in Education (WED): The master's degree with a major in workforce education and development is designed to accommodate a broad range of individuals preparing for training, instructional and administrative roles in career and technical education, business, industry, government, and other fields. The major consists of a minimum of 32 semester hours (thesis option) or 36 semester hours (non-thesis option) of course work for students with a background in training or education. Masters of Sciences in Education/J.D. in Law (EAHE):
The Department of Educational Administration and Higher Education (EAHE) is partnering with the School of Law to offer a joint Masters of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.) degree along with the Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree. This program provides the opportunity to supplement a traditional legal education with the experience of school administration at the elementary and secondary level. Students in this joint program will be uniquely prepared for careers that combine both legal and education needs, such as k-12 administration, public policy leadership roles, and student or employee advocate. Finally, students with this joint degree will be prepared to address the myriad of societal that present complex legal and educational issues. Students who complete this program will have enhanced educational and professional opportunities both inside and outside of academia. Learn more

Exercise Science (KIN):
The Exercise Science program includes coursework in the physiology of human performance and physical fitness and provides students the opportunity to seek additional clinical experiences.  The program includes coursework in research techniques and a thesis or research project in an area of common interest to the student and faculty.  The Exercise Physiology Laboratory contains equipment for such activities as exercise stress testing, body composition analysis, electromyography, and analysis of blood variables.  Students are prepared for roles in athletic training, cardiac rehabilitation, adult fitness, strength and conditioning, personal fitness training, coaching, teaching, and advanced degree work.  Programs will be individualized to provide coursework and related experiences to match students' career goals. Instructional Design (CI):
The graduate specialization in Instructional Development (I.D.) prepares individuals to serve as instructional designers/developers or training specialists in business, academic, health care, industrial, non-profit, or government settings. Placement opportunities have been excellent in this rapidly changing field. Learn more

Instructional Technology (CI):
The Instructional Technology (IT) track prepares an individual for education and training careers in academic, business, government, and health care settings. Our graduates will be qualify for such positions as Instructional Technologist, Instructional Designer/Developer, Media Specialist, and Learning Resource Center Director. They have found employment around the world in business, industry, government colleges and universities. Learn more

Recreation (HER):
Our program offers a master’s of science degree in recreation.  Completion of this degree equips students with advanced-level skills in both recreation practice and leadership.  Students can specialize in one of three areas:  administration of recreation and park systems, recreation resource administration, and therapeutic recreation.  Career opportunities for graduates include positions in settings such as in outdoor recreation in state parks or national forests; in commercial recreation, managing health clubs or resorts; in colleges or universities, managing recreation programs for students; and in communities providing recreation services for citizens of various ages.  Graduates with a therapeutic recreation specialty may practice in the community or clinical setting providing leisure activities to special populations such as senior citizens or individuals with disabilities. Rehabilitation Administration and Services (REHAB):
The degree granted by the Rehabilitation Administration and Services program is the Master's of Science degree. The M.S. degree is felt to be most appropriate for individuals who are or plan to become practitioners or administrators within direct service programs. The M.S. degree emphasizes professional applied training, and knowledge and skills required to appropriately utilize and evaluate rehabilitation research. Learn more

Rehabilitation Counselor (REHAB):
The Rehabilitation Counselor Training Program is to prepare professional Rehabilitation Counselors to work with people with physical, mental, or emotional disability. The goal of the Rehabilitation Counselor is to assist people with disabilities to achieve maximum psychological, social, vocational, economic independence, and quality of life to their fullest capacity. The foundation of Rehabilitation Counseling is one of empowerment in which individuals exercise control over their own lives. Rehabilitation Counseling focuses on the whole person, including physical, psychological and spiritual aspects, as well as family, social and work relationships.

The Rehabilitation Counselor needs advanced skills in interpersonal communications and counseling, assessment procedures, case management, coordination of services, job placement, and understanding of psychosocial and medical aspects of disability. Rehabilitation Counselors also work closely with family members, and confer with a number of other professionals, such as physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, audiologists, and other health professionals. The curriculum of Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Counseling are designed to help students develop these skills. Learn more

Masters of Social Work (SSW):
Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree program offers preparation for advanced professional social work practice. The organizing principle of the M.S.W. Program is the improvement of the quality of individual life through the enhancement of social and economic justice and opportunity. Upon completion of the M.S.W. Program, the student will have acquired knowledge, values, and skills consistent with the social work profession and will be capable ultimately of engaging in autonomous social work practice. Graduates with such preparation will be able to effectively deliver the social services needed to meet human needs in both urban and rural areas.

Students in the first year of the program take the foundation curriculum which consists of 30 semester hours. The second year curriculum is organized around the following areas of emphasis: health/mental health; and children, youth, and families. The school also offers course work in preparation for School Social Work Type 73 Certification by the Illinois State Board of Education. Applicants must indicate their preference of area of emphasis. Although we attempt to accommodate each applicant's first preference for a second-year emphasis, we do not guarantee that individuals will receive their first choice in field practicum assignment.  Learn more

Concurrent J.D./M.S.W. Degree Program (SSW):
The program is designed to educate practitioners in law and social work to effectively utilize the problem-solving strategies and techniques of both disciplines. Students prepared in this program will develop an understanding of the ethics, language, research, history, and processes of both professions. Individuals so trained will be uniquely prepared for careers which combine both legal and human service needs such as administration, supervision of the provision of services, public policy leadership roles, family practice, and community planning and development. In addition, strengthening the academic training of lawyers and social workers will enhance the quality of research performed in both disciplines as well as enhance the quality of publications in both fields of study. Finally, students with this concurrent degree will be uniquely prepared to address the myriad of problems in our society which present complex legal and social issues. Students who complete this concurrent program will have enhanced educational and professional opportunities both inside and outside of academia. Learn more

Special Education (EPSE): 4 parts:
The Master of Science in Education (MSED) degree within the Special Education Program prepares individuals to become highly skilled educators for teaching or administrators in public and private schools or agencies. The Master’s degree program offers students five areas of specialization: (1) Early childhood special education; (2) Behavior Intervention Specialist, (3) Curriculum Adaptation Specialist, (4) Multiple Disabilities Specialist and (5) Special Education Supervision.

As individuals with advanced professional preparation, our graduates are in a position to utilize their experience and their advanced knowledge and skills to facilitate the development of quality educational programs for children and youth in a variety of settings. They may serve in a number of capacities such as consultants to work with general and special educators to develop quality instructional programs for students with disabilities, as mentors or peer coaches for faculty members who are new or returning to teaching in special education, as instructors in community colleges, and as administrators and supervisors in public human service agencies. Sport Studies (KIN): The Sport program offers students a broad-based foundation through courses in sport psychology, sport sociology, and various aspects of sport management/administration. Programs may focus on the areas of Sport Management or Social Psychology of Sport. Other interest areas such as pedagogy, coaching, and athletic training can be strengthened through the Sport Studies curriculum. Students are prepared for roles such as coaching, teaching, administration, athletic support services, and advanced degree work.
