Dr. Jackie L. Cox has been named as the 2009 recipient of the Distinguished Life Achievement in Mathematics by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM), a 1400 member state-wide organization with ties to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The Distinguished Life Achievement in Mathematics recipient must be retired or near retirement, be a member of ICTM for several years, and be one whose career has demonstrated distinguished and honorable service to mathematics education in Illinois.
First given in 1963, Dr. Cox will be the 52nd recipient of this award. She has been a member of ICTM since 1988 and has served two terms as an ICTM Board Member, including Director of K-5, Board Secretary, Board Chair, Co-Editor of the ICTM Bulletin, and President 2005-2007. In addition, she has served on numerous ICTM committees, planned math conferences, secured math grants, published several math activities in various journals, published a calculator book for teachers, and has made presentations at ICTM state and regional conferences. As a classroom teacher, Dr. Cox was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching in 1993.
ICTM was organized in 1949 to create and foster greater interest in the teaching of mathematics at all grade levels. The purposes of ICTM are to encourage an active interest in all areas of mathematics and mathematics education, to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and the role of mathematics in other disciplines, to promote research in the teaching and learning of mathematics, and to provide opportunities for exchange of views regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Dr. Cox is a clinical instructor in the Office of Teacher Education and director of the Teachers Academy for Life Long Learning (TALL) workshop the College sponsors each year. She will be recognized at the 60th ICTM Annual Meeting on 10/16/09 in Peoria, IL.
